Caring for Your Douglas Fir Christmas Tree: Tips from Our US Tree Farm

By Christopher Martin

A fresh Douglas Fir from our USA farm lands in your Hong Kong home, bringing soft needles, strong retention, and that crisp winter scent. To keep it looking sharp through the holiday season, here’s what you need to do, straight-up, with practical tips and no extra fluff.

When you order from us, our delivery team can pick a prime Douglas Fir for you, or you can choose your own. We ensure vibrant, flexible needles and a moist trunk base for maximum freshness, so your tree lasts from late November to the New Year.

Pick the right spot

Finding the right spot in your home is key. Hong Kong’s warm climate can stress a tree, so place it in a cool corner near a power outlet for lights. If you’re using extension cords, keep them along walls to avoid tripping. Steer clear of heaters, fireplaces, or south-facing windows—draw curtains to block intense sun. Set your air-con to 16-18°C to keep the tree happy.

The Stand Matters

The stand matters. We offer two types this year, Auto Lever or Compact, so pick one that fits your tree’s trunk snugly and holds at least 1 liter of water. Lay a tarp or mat underneath to catch needles and protect your floors.

When your tree arrives

Before bringing it inside, prep the tree. Our delivery team can saw off an inch from the trunk base with a straight cut—no V-shapes or drilling, as those mess with water uptake. Then soak the trunk in a bucket of cold water for a few hours. Some trees drink up to 4 liters on day one, dropping to about 1 liter daily after. Stick to plain tap water; additives like lemonade can harm the tree or pets.

Setting up is smoother with a friend. Secure the tree in the stand on the tarp before adding water. Avoid soil or sand—they block hydration. Let the tree sit for a few hours to let the branches settle naturally.

Lights

For lights, go with LEDs. They stay cool, preventing needle drop and fire risks in Hong Kong’s humidity. Switch them off when you’re out or sleeping. Candles are a no-go—too risky.

Water

Watering is non-negotiable. Check the stand daily, keeping the trunk base covered by at least 2 inches of water. Hong Kong’s heat dries trees fast, so don’t let the stand go empty, or sap will seal the cut. Plain water does the job.

When it’s time to decorate, wait for the tree to settle, then add lightweight ornaments, evenly spread. Whether you lean into Hong Kong’s neon vibe or keep it minimal, your Douglas Fir’s lush branches make every decoration pop.

Daily Care

Continue with the care: water daily, watch for needle drop, and adjust the spot or air conditioning as needed. Stay away from heat sources. With these steps, your tree stays fresh for 4-8 weeks, holding strong through the holidays.

Wrapping It Up

Your Douglas Fir from our USA farm, delivered to Hong Kong, is ready to shine. Select a fresh one, place it in a cool spot, secure it in a sturdy stand, prepare it with a trim and soak, water it daily, use LED lights, and decorate thoughtfully. Stick with the routine, and your tree will carry that holiday vibe through New Year, no problem.
